Research interest

My research to date focussed in first place on aspects of phylogeny, biogeography, taxonomy and nomenclature of various groups in the plant kingdom, especially the ecologically and economically important mint family (Lamiaceae).
In addition, part of previous and ongoing work dealt with establishment and maintenance of research infrastructure such as biodiversity databases and natural history collections like herbaria and living plant collections. In all studies we tried to address and increase awareness for the problem of long term storage of biological and ecological data.
Some side projects concentrated on a more historical aspect of natural sciences such as biographies of individual researchers and the fate of their collections.
In recent years population genetics came into focus, especially molecular and ecological mechanisms triggering speciation and radiation in non model plants.
At the TU this will be expanded to investigate effects of restoration of various habitats at the molecular and genetic level.
